Worlds of Cityvision – The Los Angeles Exhibition

Descrivere l’effetto emotivo che la mostra “Worlds of Cityvision” (WU_HO Gallery, 6518 Hollywood Boulevard L.A. CA) suscita, non è semplice: si tratta di una modalità inedita di vivere un’esposizione; trovare un termine di paragone risulta difficile.

Permettendomi una digressione, si può dire che si tratta di uno spazio non dissimile da quello di una fiaba russa. La fiaba russa comincia sempre introducendo uno spazio senza spazio e un tempo senza tempo come un’icona bizantina..: “in un certo tempo, in un certo reame, che poi è quello dove viviamo noi… eh, c’ero anch’io…”; e queste ultime “precisazioni” sono umoristiche, è ovvio che si tratta dell’opposto.

Lo spazio principale è stato suddiviso in ambienti che evocano con immagini e parole mondi fantastici, esistiti “un po’ ovunque nel mondo” ogni volta che è stato bandito un concorso, lanciato un messaggio. Tale stringente alternanza costringe il visitatore a compiere, fisicamente, gesti precisi (scostare la parete in tessuto all’ingresso e all’uscita, chinarsi man mano che si avanza per passare attraverso varchi sempre più stretti); e concentrarsi in ambienti differenti e limitati, intimi, riflessivi. Un impianto scenico, che propone una sorta di percorso iniziatico a tappe dove oggetti e parole hanno un significato particolare perché posti in quel modo e in quel contesto. Avanza innaturalmente il tempo in questo “marchingegno”, ruotando come scene diverse di un teatro che sono divenute realtà immutabili.

Ma dove conduce il percorso iniziatico? A nulla. Si tratta –alla Dostoevskij- di un percorso che ha smarrito (o non ancora trovato?) la verità finale, ritorna su “qualcosa da risolvere prima”; quindi non con una rivelazione, ma con una domanda finisce, proponendo il concorso “l’architettura dell’umanità del futuro” e costringendo ad un altro sforzo (ancora va scostata la stoffa: accettate la sfida o tornate indietro!) per uscirne fuori. E solo allora scopriamo che siamo stati introdotti a un nuovo rituale, stavolta autogeno, di crescita. Arriverete a un ambiente completamente diverso che assomiglia, fisicamente, a un brainstorming – un insieme caotico di parole e lettere, o meglio di idee e personalità; ecco ciò che vi succederà partecipando al nuovo concorso -alla nuova sfida.

Infine salirete una ripida scala che vi porterà allo spazio ristretto della “Competition room”, sala dedicata ai progetti presentati dai concorrenti passati dei nostri concorsi, esposti in maniera “classica”, in ordine e con un cartellino per i credits. Chi partecipa ai concorsi di Cityvision non fa solo questo, non produce solo “pezzi di carta”, tavole che somigliano più a giochi di fantasia che ad architetture (ricordiamo le assonometrie di Gae Aulenti per la Gare D’Orsey?): attraversa un lungo percorso che lo porta -“nel mentre” e non alla fine- a scorgere quella bellezza dove gli opposti si toccano tra loro.

Describing the emotional effect which the “Worlds of Cityvision” exhibition (WUHO Gallery, 6518 Hollywood Boulevard, L.A. CA) provokes is not easy at all: it is about an unusual modality to live in an exposition; finding a suitable term is quite difficult.

By allowing me a digression, it may be said that it is about a space that is not so different than that of a Russian tale. The Russian tale generally introduces a space without a space and a time without a time just like in a Byzantine icon…:”At a certain moment, in a certain kingdom, that it is, then, the place where we live…eh, I was there…” ; and these last “clarifications” are humorous, it is evident that it is about the opposite.

The main space was subdivided in atmospheres that evoke with both images and words fantastic worlds that existed “a little bit everywhere in the world” every time a message has been spread and a competition has been launched. Such a precise alternation incites the visitor to carry through physically choreographed gestures (move aside the fabric wall at the entrance and the exit, bowing gradually in order to go forward and pass through gaps that are even tighter) by focusing his attention on different, narrow, intimate and reflexive ambiences. A stage set system, which proposes a type of initiation journey, in stages, where objects and words have a particular meaning for these places in that way and context. Time flows unnaturally in this “mechanism” by revolving some type of different scenes out of a theatre into becoming an immutable reality.

But what goal does the path of initiation strive to? Towards nothing. It is yet about – quoting Dostoevsky – a journey where the final truth vanished (or has not yet been found?); it returns at “something that needs to be solved first”. Thereafter, instead of a revelation, it ends with a question, by suggesting the “Architecture of the future mankind” competition’s theme and also by suggesting another effort (the cloth must be yet moved aside: accept the challenge or turn back!) in order to get out on the other side. And only in that moment we discover that we have been introduced to a new ritual, this time autogenous, with an increasing aspect. You will find yourself in a totally different ambience that looks somehow, physically, like a brainstorming – a chaotic chaos of words and letters, or better, of ideas and personalities; this is what is going to happen to you by participating at the new competition – at the new challenge.

Finally, you will climb a steep stair that will lead you into the little space dedicated to the “Competition room”, a hall devoted to the projects which had been presented by the many participants of our previous competitions, and laid out in a “classical” way, in order and with a tag for credits.

Anyone who participates to the Cityvision’s competitions does not merely stop at this stage, and does not produce only “pieces of paper”, boards that are comparable to a game of fantasy and not that of architecture (Do we remember Gae Aulenti’s axonometrics for Gare D’Orsey?): the participant plunges headfirst into long journeys that take him – “during” and not in the end-to grasp the beauty where opposites are touching each other…
