“Torrida estate 1876. Il Mississippi era, se possibile, ancora più limaccioso del solito lungo le sponde infestate dalle zanzare. Tom stava riposando sotto un folto albero, in testa il solito berretto da contadino, e una cicca di sigaro in bocca. E ne aveva bisogno! Alla fiera degli animali ne aveva combinata un’altra: si era impadronito di soppiatto del pallone aerostatico del prete mormone che faceva la predica sei volte al giorno da un’altezza di circa cinque metri da terra. Piuttosto difficile da controllare però per un monello semianalfabeta. Il risultato era che pallone e Tom erano prima finiti in acqua e poi s’erano ritrovati stesi ad asciugare, tra le risate generali e le imprecazioni del prete (!) sgocciolando al giallo sole dell’Alabama, a dei cavi tesi..”. Se fossi stato S. L. Clemens, cioè Mark Twain, dopo aver visto “HE” la nuova istallazione realizzata dal gruppo torinese “Bam!” presso il museo MAXXI di Roma, avrei scritto questo nuovo capitolo del Tom Sawyer. L’installazione, che ha vinto il concorso Yap 2013, è il risultato di un percorso complesso caratterizzato da grande rigore progettuale e dall’interazione di differenti figure professionali. L’installazione è mirata alla creazione di un volume sospeso in materiale tessile colorato permeabile al vento e alla luce, in netto contrasto con la natura cementizia grigia del MAXXI. HE rimane sospeso come il microcosmo isolato di un esperimento fisico volto a imbrigliare il vento come fosse un messaggio, restituito poi alla terra sotto forma di pioggia. La perifrasi di una nuvola, più precisa di altre che la capitale d’Italia ospita. L’apparente nemesi delle forze vitali continua con la caduta dell’acqua su un piano tangibile, in legno, e infine su un prato in vera erba che, opportunamente piazzata per l’occasione su un movimento di terra, viene simbolicamente  vitalizzata dall’acqua; un posto su cui il pubblico può ristorarsi. E i bambini sentirsi un po’ come Tom. Di sera, un sistema di proiettori crea dei giochi di luce suggestivi. Il materiale utilizzato per il “corpo” di HE è una rete ombreggiante agricola tessuta con tecniche veliche per ottenere la migliore uniformità della superficie finale. Un sistema di cavi d’acciaio semplicemente tesati (ma calcolati con molta fatica) mantiene “in forma” l’installazione e fa si che essa non diventi un aquilone errante. A volare via, per ora, è solo la fantasia di un promettente gruppo di giovani architetti.

The torrid summer of 1876, Mississippi was still muddy as usual along the shores infested with mosquitoes. Tom was resting under a large tree, he had a farmer cap on his head and a cigarette butt in his mouth.

And he needed! At the animal fair he has done something particular, once again: he took the balloon of the Mormon priest who have sermons six times a day standing five meters height from the ground.

And it’s really difficult to control it, however, for an illiterate naughty kid.

The result was that the ball and Tom had finished first in the water, then they were lied down to dry their self while they were laughing and the priest was cursing(!) and dripping under the yellow sun of Alabama.

If I was S.L Clemens (Mark Twain) after seeing “HE” the new installation of a group from Turin “Bam!” in MAXXI museum of Rome, I would write this chapter again but about Tome Sawyer.

The installation which won 2013 Yap MAXXI competition is the result of a complex process characterized by high accurate design and interaction of professionals. The installation is focused on a creation of a suspense volume with colored textile material permeable to wind and light, in sharp contrast with the nature of gray concrete of MAXXI. HE remains suspended like the isolated microcosm of physical experiment intended to harness the wind as a message, then return to the ground as the rain.

The periphrasis of a cloud more specific than others, hosted by the capital of Italy. The apparent nemesis of vital forces continues with the fall of the water on a tangible wooden floor and finally on a meadow of true grass which properly is placed for occasion of the movement of the earth, it’s symbolically vitalized from water; the place where public could refresh their self and children could feel same as Tom. The light projection system at night creates impressive games of light.

The material which is used for the body of “HE” is an agricultural shade Net woven with sailing techniques to obtain the best uniformity of the final surface. A system of steel cables support the installation and maintain it’s shape in order to not become like a wandering kite.

Flying a way, for now, is just the fantasy of a promising group of young architect.
