NY Graffity / Andrea Nelli

Andrea Nelli non parla molto del fermento creativo della New York degli anni ‘70. Lascia parlare una vecchia Leica, obiettivo 50 mm. Immagini che odorano di gas di scarico, di aria calda che esce dallo sfiato della metropolitana. È la New York che vede le prime donne in carriera che incrociano lo sguardo del fotografo, la New York dei manifestanti gay, delle black panthers, dei cantanti proto-punk con gli occhi pregni di eroina. Ed è la New York dei primi graffiti, che sono l’oggetto di ricerca dell’autore su cui sovente posa lo sguardo in modo sfuggente, quasi distratto.  Mancano ancora nove anni all’uscita del documentario ‘Style Wars’ ma le tag hanno già invaso le superfici di tutta la City. È il 1972, writers appena maggiorenni con nomi improbabili rivendicano la propria posizione nel mondo: il pennarello è il loro ‘google maps’. Forse attraversano strade così lontane da casa che quasi, quelle scritte, restituiscono loro un senso, in un contesto di massificazione e annullamento progressivo di luoghi dedicati alla socialità.

Dalla delicata poetica di quegli scatti nasce l’urgenza di invitare Andrea Nelli ad Outdoor Urban Art Festival (out-door.it). Una mostra personale dedicata alla nascita del graffiti-writing, all’interno di un contesto che rivela, a Roma, le avanguardie di questa corrente chiamando artisti internazionali a confrontarsi con le architetture del quartiere Ostiense con il chiaro obiettivo di migliorare la vivibilità degli spazi pubblici, diffondendo la cultura della ‘bellezza urbana’. Un invito a Guardare in alto per riscoprire gli spazi urbani con un nuovo punto di vista ed una rinnovata gioia del colore.

Andrea Nelli doesn’t talk too much about the creative turmoil of New York in the 70’s. He let an old Leica 50 mm lens talk on his behalf. Images that smell of exhaust fumes, like hot air coming out from the blowhole of the underground. It’s the New York of the first carreer women catching the photographer’s eyes, the NY of gay demonstrators, black panthers, proto-punk singers with their eyes overloaded by heroin. And it’s the New York of the first graffiti as well, specific interest of the author and his shifty glance. 

There are nine years to the release of the documentary ‘Style Wars’, nevertheless the tags have already overrun the surfaces of the whole City. It’s 1972 and graffiti-writers just over eighteen with funny names claim their position in the world: the markers are their ‘google maps’. Maybe they were crossing streets so far from their homes that, those graffiti gave them back a meaning, in an ever increasing scenario of massification and annihilation of social spaces. 

From the delicate poetics of those shots arises the urgency to present Andrea Nelli inside Outdoor Urban Art Festival (out-door.it). A personal exhibition dedicated to the birth of graffiti-writing within a context that is unveiling in Rome the vanguards of this movement, calling international artists to confront themselves with the architectures of Ostiense neighborhood. A relation that is trying to answer to a precise aim: improving the liveableness of public spaces and spreading the culture of ‘urban beauty’. An invitation to Look Up to rediscover urban spaces with a renewed point of view and through the joy of colors.
