MY MASOCHISM an architecture love story

If masochism means feeling pain and pleasure from an act of violence on his own body, then it’s most surely connected to the architect’s role. In fact few professions like ours have this “privilege”. Architect is dangerously close and even penetrating without realizing it into masochism is clearly demonstrated by such factors as the passion for sleepless nights, the abuse of alcohol to be less tired, the idea that there is never enough time…. But all this stuff leads to a large artistic production and often without these components would be less. The following list attempts to categorize the various forms of this super-power.

Nihilist Masochism 

Common to many architects of our time often unaware victims of the impossibility of acting or perfectly lined up in a Catenaccio of  Trapattoni inspiration.

Hedonistic Masochism 

It’s a widespread phenomenon among Super Architects and Normal Citizens. In the first one it manifests itself through a sense of omnipotence uber alles.  In the second it is revealed thanks to the GOD IKEA that consecrates them, with a perfect 1€ wooden sword placed on their shoulder, to small Deus Ex Machina of their private habitats, feeding out of proportion their ego from m-a-k-e-o-v-e-r-h-o-u-s-e-t-v-s-h-o-w.

Ephemeral Masochism 

He’s the Cat and I’m the Fox… The illusion that one day everyone will produce the architecture of the great Masters, dangerously drives these individuals to push their ambitions beyond their potential, creating false myths and ranks of dissatisfied.

Mercenary Masochism 

It generates a devastating effect on the lives of everyone. It brings together those [un]aware players in the production of lethal architecture that destroys the city, giving it impossible wounds to mend.

Digital Masochism 

It produces comfort and emotional overdose. It’s famous among geeks that spend many hours researching, modeling, mathematizing and massaging two and three dimensional objects sometimes losing touch with reality.

But on these days maybe it’s a good thing.

Utopian Masochism 

It creates Artificial Paradises. Essential manifestation of culture and consciousness of its own commitment towards our sense of making, it enables a high progression of knowledge imagining future scenarios that allow us to intercept needs that currently don’t exist. If abused it can lead to a disconnection with the real concrete world of building.

Se il masochismo consiste nel provare dolore e quindi piacere da un atto di violenza sul proprio corpo, allora esso è insito nella figura dell’architetto. Pochi mestieri come il nostro, infatti, godono di questo “privilegio”. Che l’architetto si avvicini pericolosamente ed anzi penetri nel masochismo senza rendersene conto è chiaramente evidenziato da alcuni fattori come la passione per le notti insonni, l’abuso di alcool per sentir meno la fatica, l’idea che non ci sia mai abbastanza tempo…. Tutto ciò però sfocia in una grande produzione artistica che, spesso, senza le sopraelencate componenti verrebbe meno. Il seguente elenco, poi, cerca di categorizzare le varie forme espressive di questo super-potere. 

Masochismo Nichilista 

Comune a molti architetti del nostro tempo spesso vittime coscienti dell’impossibilità di agire o perfettamente schierati in un modulo a catenaccio d’ispirazione trapattoniana. 

Masochismo Edonistico 

Fenomeno ampiamente diffuso tra i Super Architects e i Normali Cittadini. 

Nei primi si manifesta attraverso un senso di onnipotenza uber alles. 

Nei secondi si rivela grazie al DIO IKEA che li consacra, con una perfetta spada di legno da 1€ poggiata sulla loro spalla, a piccoli Deus Ex Machina del proprio habitat privato, alimentando a dismisura il loro libero arbitrio da 

m-a-k-e-o-v-e-r-h-o-u-s-e-t-v-s-h-o-w. 

Entrambi sono portatori dello stesso vessillo, ovvero quello che porta l’effigie del NO all’etica collettiva. 

Masochismo Effimero 

Lui è il Gatto ed io la Volpe… 

L’illusione che tutti possano un giorno produrre l’architettura dei grandi Maestri, avvicina pericolosamente questi soggetti a spingere le proprie ambizioni oltre le proprie potenzialità, creando falsi miti e conseguenti schiere di insoddisfatti. 

Masochismo Mercenario 

Genera effetti devastanti sulla vita di tutti. 

Raggruppa quei protagonisti [in]consapevoli di letali produzioni architettoniche che mortificano la città, conferendole ferite impossibili da ricucire. 

Masochismo Digitale 

Produce benessere ed overdose di emozioni. 

E’ tipica di smanettoni che per la grande quantità di ore passate a ricercare, modellare, matematizzare e massaggiare oggetti bi e tridimensionali spesso perdono il contatto con la realtà. 

Ma di questi tempi forse è un bene. 

Masochismo Utopico 

Crea Paradisi Artificiali. 

Essenziale manifestazione di cultura e coscienza del proprio impegno nei confronti del proprio fare, permette un’altissima progressione delle proprie conoscenze immaginando scenari futuri che permettono di intercettare bisogni che ancora non esistono. 

Se abusato può portare ad uno scollamento col mondo reale e concreto del costruire.
