IL LATO OSCURO DELLA PROFESSIONE

Yesterday I was in a sex shop and Luca, the clerk, asked me a weird question…in front of a cabinet in which latex toys were carefully arranged, he enquired: “I now know what customers want, managers and professionals like BDSM articles (he winks at the whips) but few architects buy them, why?”. Then he left me standing before a display of leather and chain tools, while he went to serve a customer, and I thought of Tiburtina station. Speaking of lashes, a railway is an example of a wound in a city, the station hovers over a gash that like Prometheus’s wound, appears destined never to heal… the station actually seems to enjoys this martyrdom and sticks its finger in the festering wound. It abandons any hope of solving surrounding historical urban degradation but instead adds an object trouvé – one of many deus ex machina scattered about Rome. This sadistically contemporary crystal giant with its luxury boutiques and enormous glass windows open on the city’s urban squalor and the ripped skyline, and humiliates and mortifies the neighbourhood. Desideri then drops the role of the cynic who towers over the hedonistic city (a city glad of the success of marketing) and bows to the rules of composition and materials. In a bout of self-destructive behaviour he created the bowels of a leviathan where surreal artificialgreen clouds that will house shops float about like in a Dalì painting against a plastic starry night line. The spaces are gigantic and proportioned to the huge (expected) passenger flows of superfast trains. Everything is created with an erotic taste for detail, obsessive patience: lighting, structures, volumes, surfaces, decorations, edges, cables and bolts…..and then… then! I now know how to answer Luca: architects do not need other toys!

Ieri ero in un sexy shop e Luca, il commesso, mi ha posto una strana domanda… davanti alla vetrina dove i “giochi” in lattice sono stati esposti con cura, chiede: “Io ormai capisco cosa vuole un cliente… ai dirigenti e ai professionisti piacciono gli articoli sadomaso (indica dei frustini ammiccando) ma pochi architetti li comprano, perché?”. Mi lascia a riflettere davanti ad arnesi in cuoio e catene, mentre segue un nuovo cliente, e mi viene in mente la stazione Tiburtina. Parlando di frustate, la ferrovia è un esempio di ferita urbana, e la stazione passa sopra uno squarcio che, come quello di Prometeo, pare destinato a non rimarginarsi mai… sembra invece godere del martirio, infilando il dito nella storica piaga: rinuncia a risolvere il degrado dei quartieri ma vi sovrappone un object trouvé -uno dei tanti deus ex machina architettonici di questa città. Un gigantesco mostro di cristallo sadicamente contemporaneo, dalle enormi vetrate aperte su una città palazzinara, popolare, squarciata nello skyline e mortificata dal nuovo Colosseo pieno di boutique di lusso che la umilia orgoglioso. Desideri si toglie poi l’uniforme borchiata del cinico che s’impone sulla metropoli gaudente (e contenta del successo di “marketing”) e cambia ruolo per vestire i panni, i lacci e le catene del succube delle regole materiali e compositive: elabora con piglio autolesionista, con lentezza e massima attenzione un ventre di leviatano dove come in un quadro di Dalì galleggiano le surreali nuvole color verde chimico che conterranno i negozi, sotto un cielo stellato grigio finto e mentale. Gli spazi sono enormi e proporzionati ai (previsti) flussi dell’alta velocità ferroviaria, ogni cosa è stata immaginata con gusto erotico per il dettaglio, con pazienza ossessiva: lampade strutture volumi rivestimenti serigrafie parapetti agganci tiranti viti… e ancora… ancora…! Ora so come rispondere a Luca: non abbiamo bisogno di altre maîtresse.
