GHOST PAVILION

Concept

For FARM Cultural Park, we propose a pavilion entirely carved out of air, in which air, as an unusual building material, creates new realities, as does the art institution it presents. The question of technology is redirected from solving technical problems, to a broader question : what is there to gain by building with air?

Once we started thinking this way, we realized that inflatable structures produce a different type of space altogether in terms of the human body – a space much closer to the space-time of our universe. It is a space that can bend toward a body moving through it; a space in which a person becomes aware of others’ bodies as well – how they shift together when one sits next to another on an inflatable floor. Air is also free, which means there can be rooms that are not accessible at all, only for the wind and sun to live in.

Nostalgic for the ‘bouncy castles’ of our childhood, we introduce people to art discussions and presentations held on inflatable floors that can be laid down on, jumped on, or walked on with socks. Empty, then, becomes more meaningful than full, because a building of air means a building so dematerialized that its value can only come from that which moves through it – ideas, meetings, spontaneous behavior, and social interactions.

Keeping this in mind, we propose a set of spaces completely surrounded by air. Some spaces are only passages, some have surprise rooms, and one is an auditorium. No one space dominates and assigning functions to them is avoided. The pavilion’s spaces and the contents and people they hold, are meant to be discovered, looked for, understood in a different context, a new reality.
